This Rolex Datejust ref. 1601 from 1968 is a watch of significant collectible interest, accompanied by an exceptionally rare set of original documentation for a Datejust of this period.
The watch is accompanied by its original warranty, COSC certificate, original sales receipt from the authorised dealer dated 1968, and a later warranty issued by the same dealer following a service carried out in 2002. A coherent and complete group of documents that allows the history of the watch to be clearly and continuously traced.
One of the most appealing elements is the black gilt galvanic dial with mirror-like finish. The dial is well preserved, showing only light and normal signs of ageing consistent with its age, while retaining excellent visual depth. The tritium is original, correctly matching between the hour markers and hands, and reacts evenly under UV light. The case is attractive and well proportioned, as is the Jubilee bracelet. Both have been polished over the years, but remain in very good condition, with correct proportions and a very pleasant presence on the wrist.
From a period-correctness standpoint, the watch is extremely coherent for its year of production: black gilt galvanic tritium dial, automatic calibre 1570 with “D” serial prefix, 6251 bracelet with 55 end links and clasp dated 68, caseback signed 1601 and stamped I 67, and Twinlock crown.
A very attractive Datejust, completely original and period-correct, featuring a fascinating dial and rare documentation that significantly enhances its collectible value.
