This Rolex Submariner 1680 “Red” represents one of the rarest and most significant configurations within the entire production of the reference. The MK1 dial, used exclusively on the very first Red Submariner 1680s, is today extremely difficult to encounter, especially in a state of preservation like this.
The rarity of the watch is further enhanced by the presence of a period-correct 9315 bracelet with clasp dated 70, 280 end links, and “Patent Pending” extension — a correct and very rare combination, seen on only a handful of Red 1680 examples.
The state of preservation is excellent. The case shows normal signs of wear consistent with its age, yet retains correct lines and proportions and is very likely unpolished. The MK1 dial is very well preserved, with original “reticulated” tritium and an even, natural patina. The bezel and bracelet show wear consistent with the period; the bracelet is not stretched. The movement has been recently serviced by my watchmaker and is running perfectly.
From a period-correctness standpoint, the watch features an extremely coherent configuration for its production era: MK1 red dial, period-correct Fat Font insert, calibre 1570 with D-prefix serial, caseback stamped II 69, and folded 9315 bracelet with clasp 70, 280 end links, and Patent Pending extension.
The only exception is the crown, which should originally be a Twinlock and has been replaced over time with a later Triplock, together with its tube — a functional intervention disclosed with full transparency.
A first-generation Submariner 1680 Red, exceptionally rare for both configuration and condition, and of outstanding collectible importance.
