What you need to know about this watch

Before the Daytona — Rolex’s ultimate chronograph — the Maison had already created several extraordinary chronographs. As early as the 1930s, Rolex produced numerous references, each with its own unique and fascinating characteristics. Many of these chronographs were powered by Valjoux calibers, which at the time were considered a benchmark for classic chronograph movements. Some models featured snap-on case backs, others screw-down waterproof cases; the pushers could be either pump-style or square. The dials also presented a wide variety of configurations and were distinguished by the presence of multiple scales — tachymeter, telemeter, pulsometer — all printed directly on the dial. The Daytona would later become the first Rolex chronograph to move the tachymeter scale to the external bezel, introducing a highly distinctive aesthetic element.

The example presented here is a so-called “pre-Daytona”, reference 6234. It is fitted with pump pushers, a screw-down case back, a Valjoux 72B caliber, and a stunning grey opaline dial enhanced by black and blue scales. This configuration is extremely rare and further enriched by the “MILES” unit on the dial, a detail reserved for pieces destined for the American market. This is confirmed by the export code “ROW” engraved on the movement bridge.

The dial, featuring original radium lume (never restored), shows slight signs of age yet maintains a homogeneous and captivating appearance. The case, lightly polished in the past, remains well-preserved; the movement runs perfectly and the case back screws down smoothly.

All components — dial, Valjoux 72B movement, pushers, case back, and hand set — are original and period-correct, except for the sub-register hand at 9 o’clock, which was most likely replaced over the years.

A rare, elegant chronograph rich in details that make it truly unique: the ideal piece for the collector in search of a pre-Daytona Rolex with character and history.
