What you need to know about this watch

The term “Rail” refers to a specific typographic layout on the dial, where the alignment of the two lower lines of text (for example, “Superlative Chronometer” and “Officially Certified”) forms a perfectly straight central “rail.” This detail appears on certain Rolex models, including the Sea-Dweller 1665, the Explorer II 16550, and other rare sports references produced between the late 1970s and the 1980s.

This Sea-Dweller features precisely this type of “Rail” dial, one of the rarest and most sought-after variations within the entire 1665 production. The watch is fully original for its year of production, though some components are not period-correct, having been replaced over time with genuine Rolex parts: end links (580, instead of the correct 585), clasp, crown tube, and bezel insert. The main components, however, remain original and correct for the production period: “Rail” dial, caseback signed 1665 “Patented,” and caliber 1570 movement.

The minor replacements most likely occurred during the official Rolex service in 1999, which accompanies the watch with its paperwork.

The overall condition is excellent: the dial is flawless, free of defects, and displays an even, attractive patina; the case retains its original proportions; and the movement runs perfectly.

Despite the replacement of some secondary parts, this example remains a highly appealing piece, with an excellent case and a stunning dial.

An excellent opportunity for any collector seeking a well-preserved Sea-Dweller 1665 “Rail Dial,” also appealing for its strong value proposition.
