This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak ref. 5402 is, in my opinion, one of the finest examples I have come across throughout my career. The reasons are several and become immediately clear when seeing the watch in person.
The first element that stands out is undoubtedly the dial, which over the years has developed an extraordinary coloration, with a warm, diffused “flare” spreading across the entire surface. The result is a unique, deep, and highly captivating effect.
The second key aspect is the excellent overall condition. This is not one of those 5402s that have undergone major aesthetic restoration; on the contrary, the watch still retains the natural signs of around fifty years of life, while remaining in outstanding condition, with a full case and bezel and a bracelet that is still tight. These signs do not diminish its value; rather, they enhance its charm, as they tell a real and authentic story. After all, this is a vintage watch made to be worn, and this honest patina of use is precisely what makes it so appealing today.
The even wear on the case, bezel, and bracelet pairs perfectly with the tropical brown dial, creating a highly coherent and balanced whole, where every element interacts naturally with the others.
Beyond its strong aesthetic appeal, the watch is also completely original and period-correct. The “Swiss Only” dial with low AP signature is correct for the A16XX case serial; also correct and coeval are the date disc with the characteristic curved “7,” the flat unsigned crown, and the bracelet with AP initials on the clasp, long Audemars Piguet signature on the clasp, and an undated clasp interior.
The movement, numbered 188XXX, is correct for a Royal Oak 5402 with A16XX serial, as is the internal caseback number 806XX. The watch has therefore been carefully checked and verified in every detail and can be considered 100% period-correct.
A major service has also been carried out recently, including replacement of the gaskets, by a well-known watchmaker in Milan, and the watch is now running perfectly.
