The Omega Railmaster Ref. CK 2914 was introduced in 1957 alongside the Speedmaster Ref. 2915 and the Seamaster 300 Ref. 2913, forming what is today regarded as Omega’s celebrated professional trilogy. The Railmaster was developed as an antimagnetic watch intended for technicians, scientists and professionals working in close proximity to strong magnetic fields, thanks to a special case construction incorporating internal protection for the movement.
One of the rarest and most fascinating versions of the CK 2914 family is the one produced for the Fuerza Aérea del Perú (FAP). On these watches intended for the Peruvian Air Force, the traditional “Railmaster” designation was replaced on the dial by the name “Flightmaster”, effectively creating the first historical use of this name on an Omega watch intended for operational service. Omega became a supplier to the Fuerza Aérea del Perú in the late 1950s, and these special CK 2914 watches were supplied for use by aviation personnel.
This Omega Railmaster / Flightmaster Ref. CK 2914 is a particularly fascinating and genuine example. The Omega Extract from the Archives, issued in 2014, confirms the movement number, the production date of July 1st, 1963, and delivery to Peru, all perfectly consistent with this extremely rare configuration associated with the Fuerza Aérea del Perú.
The watch is completely original and period-correct in its main components. The dial, movement, caseback and hands are all original and correct for the period of production. Of particular importance is the caseback, which retains the correct “Flightmaster” engraving and corresponding emblem, a distinctive feature of this specific version intended for the FAP.
Also particularly interesting is the original Omega crystal, which is still fitted to the watch. It shows numerous scratches and superficial marks accumulated over the course of its long life, which I deliberately chose to preserve as they form an integral part of the character and history of the watch. Beneath the crystal, the dial is actually much better preserved than it may appear in the photographs. Should the future owner wish, the crystal could of course be replaced with a correct new original Omega crystal, significantly improving the visual appearance of the dial without affecting the originality of the watch in any way.
The watch is also accompanied by a period metal bracelet that was already with the watch when it was found. The bracelet itself was not produced by Omega, while the clasp bears Omega markings. It is therefore not possible to state with certainty that it was originally supplied with the watch, although it is entirely plausible that a configuration of this type may have been used during its operational life. For this reason, it has been kept with the watch as part of its history, while the watch is currently fitted with a leather strap.
Its provenance is equally interesting. The watch has belonged to an important private collection for at least twenty years and, according to the history accompanying the piece, was purchased in the early 2000s from a pawn shop in South America, essentially in the same configuration and condition in which it appears today. It has therefore not undergone invasive cosmetic restoration intended to erase the traces of its past.
Overall, this is exactly the type of military watch that I personally find most interesting: not an example artificially restored to cosmetically perfect condition, but an authentic Omega Flightmaster FAP, complete with its own patina, original crystal and documented history, belonging to one of the rarest and most fascinating derivatives of the first-generation Railmaster.
A watch for someone looking not simply for a rare vintage Omega, but for a genuine military instrument that has survived for more than sixty years while retaining its original identity.
