The Rolex Datejust Ref. 1601 is one of the most representative references in Rolex production from the 1960s and 1970s. In this yellow gold configuration with a black gilt dial, however, the reference takes on a decidedly rarer and more desirable character. Gilt dials, distinguished by their highly reflective surface and gold-colored printing achieved through production techniques typical of dials from this period, are today among the most appreciated variants among collectors, especially when preserved in exceptional condition.
This example is particularly important for its outstanding state of preservation and the complete period-correctness of its components. The gold case appears very likely to have never been polished and retains extremely well-defined proportions, edges and finishes, together with the normal signs of use accumulated over the decades. The fluted bezel also retains remarkable definition.
The true highlight of the watch, however, is the black gilt dial, preserved in exceptional condition: the mirror-like surface is perfectly uniform and free from defects. The applied hour markers and hands are correct for the period and retain their original tritium luminous material.
The watch is completely original and period-correct in its main components. The gilt tritium dial with “T SWISS T” signature, yellow gold bezel, Twinlock crown, 1803 caseback and calibre 1570 are all original and consistent with the watch’s production period. The strap is new, while the buckle is vintage but gold-plated.
The presence of the original documents adds a further element of rarity and collectability, making an already exceptionally difficult-to-find example even more complete.
A particularly compelling opportunity for anyone looking not simply for a vintage Datejust, but for an outstanding example capable of standing out within an important collection.
