The Rolex Explorer Ref. 6610, produced approximately between 1955 and 1959, represents a key step in the evolution of the collection. Compared with the earlier Ref. 6350, it introduced the calibre 1030, which allowed for a slimmer case profile while retaining the Explorer’s distinctive features: a 36 mm Oyster case, black dial with 3-6-9 Arabic numerals and the “Officially Certified Chronometer” designation. Its relatively limited production makes the Ref. 6610 particularly sought after by collectors today.
This Rolex Explorer Ref. 6610 is a fine example dating from the late 1950s, preserved with all its original and period-correct components. Particularly noteworthy is the original OCC (“Officially Certified Chronometer”) dial, correct for the year of production, still retaining its original radium luminous material, also present on the hands.
The case features the correct engravings, while the caseback is dated 1958 and is therefore fully consistent with the watch’s production period. The movement, Rolex calibre 1030, is original, correct and fully functional, and is preserved in good condition.
The overall state of preservation is very good. Over time, the dial has developed an attractive patina, with certain areas turning towards brown tones, giving the watch a particularly appealing vintage character. The case is also in excellent condition and retains the correct proportions.
The crown has been changed over the years, the original steel bracelet is not included; the watch is currently fitted with a high-quality Made in Italy leather strap.
Overall, this is a very interesting example for collectors seeking an early-generation Rolex Explorer, distinguished by the complete period-correctness and originality of its components, together with an attractive patina developed over almost seventy years.
