This Tudor Submariner ref. 7928 from 1961 is one of the most fascinating and sought-after models in vintage Tudor production. An iconic example, distinguished by the rare “cornino” case and a beautiful gilt dial with closed minute track, a configuration particularly appreciated by collectors.
Over time, the dial has also developed a stunning and even tropical brown patina, giving this watch even greater character and appeal. Tudor 7928s from this period, preserved in such exceptional condition and retaining all original and period-correct components, are today a true rarity: very few have survived to the present day in such outstanding state.
Overall condition is exceptional. The case has never been polished, nor has the bezel, both retaining sharp lines and original proportions. The bracelet is in excellent condition, not stretched, and the bezel insert shows only light signs of wear consistent with the watch’s age. The movement is running perfectly. The dial is flawless, with an even patina matching the hands, and reacts correctly under UV light.
One particularly intriguing detail is the mark left by the radium hour hand on the dial: a typical “Mercedes” imprint, a phenomenon sometimes seen on radium-lumed watches when the hand remains stationary in the same position for a long period, bearing witness to the watch’s authentic and untouched history.
All components, in addition to being original and in excellent condition, are also fully period-correct for the year of production: “Swiss only” radium chapter-ring dial, radium hands of correct length for a chapter ring dial, cornino case, stainless steel bezel with large serrations, brown-toned “Long Five” insert, 7928-61 caseback, riveted bracelet with 80 end links and a clasp dated 61, and Twinlock crown.
A truly spectacular Tudor Submariner of great collectible importance, and one that a serious Tudor enthusiast will find hard to resist.
