What you need to know about this watch

References 6263 and 6265 were introduced in the late 1960s, replacing reference 6240—the first Cosmograph Daytona featuring a waterproof case. The two references are technically identical, with the only difference being the bezel: both feature a tachymeter scale, but on the 6265 it is made of stainless steel, while on the 6263 it is black acrylic.

Produced for nearly two decades until 1987, these models were offered with a wide variety of dial configurations. Among the most coveted variants is the so-called “Big Red” dial, as seen on this watch. The nickname comes from the large red “Daytona” text printed above the chronograph register at 6 o’clock. This dial configuration appeared on both references from the mid-1970s until the end of production.

Daytona 6263 and 6265 models with the “Big Red” dial have achieved iconic status over the years and are now highly sought-after by collectors—especially when preserved in outstanding condition, as with this remarkable example.

This particular 6263 is undoubtedly one of the finest examples currently available on the collectors’ market. Its condition is truly exceptional: the case has never been polished, the dial is flawless with bright white subdials (unlike many black Big Red dials, whose registers tend to darken due to paint oxidation), the bracelet is tight, the movement runs perfectly, and the bezel remains in excellent shape.

The watch was originally purchased by its first owner, who carefully preserved both the original box and, crucially, the original Bucherer sales receipt, which clearly states the model (Cosmograph 6263) and the date of sale (1979). The caseback also bears a typical Bucherer stock number, providing further confirmation of the receipt’s authenticity.

Having never been polished, this watch should not be expected to have a glossy or “like-new” appearance. Instead, it carries the charm of an honest, well-preserved piece with light signs of wear—scratches and marks that reflect its history and enhance its appeal.

All components are correct and period-accurate: Big Red dial, MK2 bezel, numbered manual-wind caliber 727, 78350 bracelet with 571 end links, caseback engraved 6263 CRS, P302 pushers, and Triplock 702 crown.

An exceptional, truly outstanding example—one that any collector in search of a 6263 simply cannot afford to miss.
